There is always something special about photographing a High School Sweetheart’s wedding. It can be seen and felt not only with the couple themselves, but with the entire audience that joins them on their wedding day. The parents that have watched their kids grow up together, their friends who have been through it all with them – everyone seems to have been waiting for this day as a team, rooting for them the whole way through. Christa and Kyle’s wedding was no different – everyone was on their team, and they were on the winning side.
I love that when I asked Christa and Kyle if they would like to do a First Look before their ceremony, that their response was, “Yes! We want to spend as much time with friends and family after the ceremony as possible!” Making memories with the people that have supported them through so many years was so important to them, and it showed in the way they interacted with everyone and each other.
Christa and Kyle are also expecting their first baby this summer, and during their reception they announced that their baby was a GIRL! Everyone in the room was ecstatic to hear the news, and the love for them and their baby was so palpable. This baby is already growing up so wanted and loved! It was a special thing to witness Christa’s beauty as put on her wedding gown that afternoon, with not just “the bride” glow, but also “the pregnancy” glow. Her maid of honor, her best friend of many years, is also expecting so these two rocked that baby bump out on the dance floor 🙂
Their wedding took place at the University of Maryland, where both Christa and Kyle studied and where Christa now is an academic advisor. She knew the grounds well, and it was so fun to take just Christa and Kyle around the school for their portraits….I even learned all about the good luck from rubbing the turtle’s nose (wait for it….you’ll know it when you see it!).
I love all parts about the wedding day, but I always have a few moments that really stick out to me as memorable and breath-taking. For Christa and Kyle’s wedding, those two moments were these:
During their reception, I took Christa and Kyle outside for a few moments. Everyone was having a blast on the dance floor, and the room was hot. Outside we cooled off, and these two just had a moment alone in the dark of the night. We took a few fun night shots and then headed back in. It was brief, but this time alone seemed to be the most intimate I had seen of these two. The stress of the day had drained, and they were alone for just a moment, reveling in their new lives together.
My second favorite moment from their wedding day was after we had come back in from our little break outside. The DJ had just started a slow song, and instead of the crowd dispersing as sometimes happens for slow dances, the dance floor became packed. I was surrounded by people completely in the moment. Everyone on the dance floor right then was holding so incredibly tight to each other. There were no distractions, no phony interactions….just sincere embraces and loving touches. It was the most tender dancing I’d ever witnessed at a wedding. I teared up when I saw the maid of honor grab her husband’s hand and put it on her baby bump. It was such a tender moment to witness, a simple act I and so many other women do, and yet, still special in its simplicity.
I want to thank all the vendors for contributing to such a beautiful day for Christa + Kyle, and of course tell a special thank you to the new husband and wife for trusting me with this honor.
