the 35mm

On a wedding day, I use the 35mm most during the Getting Ready portion of the day, especially if the bride or groom is getting ready in a tight space, like a hotel room. I also use it for large bridal parties and large family portraits. I LOVE using the 35mm for fun dancing shots during the reception. Sometimes I will use it for portraits of the couple if I feel like the scenery around them helps to tell their story for the day. When I'm at home, I almost always use the 35mm with my kids. I love that it captures their lives in the most true-to-life form and allows for the setting of the day to be told in the story of the image.

the 50mm

The 50mm is my most used lens of all time. If I only had one lens to use during a family or couple session, this would be it. It allows me to get tight crops when I want to, but also gives me enough space to capture the whole scene without having to be too far away from my subject. There is still a bit of compression, to help separate my subject from the background.

the 85mm

I use this lens most for couple sessions! I love the compression, and I love that it is a long enough lens that I can back up and give my clients space if I feel like they need that to feel comfortable. I love the creamy background and bokeh this lens produces! It is sharp and fast! However, I hardly ever use this for family sessions (though I have occasionally), because I feel like I need to be too far away from my subjects to fit them all in. This typically means that I lose the kids' attention quickly. I will also use this lens if the background is especially distracting - this lens helps to soften that.

the 105 macro

I LOVE this lens for all my detail shots - especially ring shots! However, I also use it as a telephoto lens during ceremonies or to get a super tight crop without being in people's faces. Sometimes I use this lens during cocktail hour if I want to capture genuine reactions from people without them realizing I am photographing them.
