I had no idea what to expect when we decided to venture to the Ice Castles in Midway, Utah. The only thing I had really seen or heard about it is all the pretty wedding styled shoots that happened there, and of course those images are EPIC and magical, so my interest was intrigued. I wish I had done a bit more research about the place before heading there – if I had, I would have known to dress everyone (including myself and Adam!) in snow pants!! We also may have brought a sled with a rope on it to pull the kids around on. But it was still really neat and a fun trip!

I loved that they had little fire stations for you to warm your hands up! If I had prepared/known about it, I would have brought smore stuff to cook over the fire! There are little benches to sit on near the fire and everything. Also, the night we went was really wet and rainy, so I would have liked to go on a clear night where the kids would have lasted longer! They did have a small stand where you could buy hot chocolate and cookies to warm up with, too.

Axton loved the slides!! But again, I really wish I had dressed them in snow pants! And next time we will go on a night that is not raining 🙂

Because it was so wet and rainy, Mira did not last very long out in the rain and cold. So overall we did not stay as long as I would have liked. We went into the gift shop and chatted with the workers there about how the warm weather has affected the ice castles this year! They opened later than previous years, and fear they will have to close sooner, too. They told me that this year’s castles were not nearly as impressive as last year’s simply because it has been too wet and warm. I learned about how ice castles got started, which was super fun: It began with just a dad wanting to make his backyard more magical for his kids. His first year creating massive ice slides and towers he used wood, but once it began to melt that obviously didn’t work well with the wood. So the following year he came up with a plan to make it all completely out of ice! And his plans just got grander and grander every year.

Overall we had a great time, but next time we will come better prepared!! Sleds, snow pants, s’mores supplies, and clear skies!

Also, I just wanted to include this picture of Mirabelle. She was so puffy in her snow suit she couldn’t even stay sitting up!
