Hi, I'm meghan

I can’t tell you how happy I am that this trip did not turn into one of those Girls trips everyone talks about taking, but never actually do. We were a determined group, rescheduling and rechecking several times before committing to a date. We all stuck to our guns and made it happen and now we have some hilarious and awesome memories that I will always treasure! We drove up to Emily’s family’s house, where we would be staying for the weekend, on Friday night. chatting and snacking the whole way (yes, I allowed myself a splurge day….or rather, a splurge 2 days 🙂 ) . After settling into the house, we started watching You’ve Got Mail, to commence our NYC weekend. Sarah and I were sitting rather far apart on a couch, Holly was on the floor, and Emily was on a different sofa. It didn’t take long for me to say, “Sorry, Sarah, but I feel the need to sit closer to you.” And that’s all it took for all of us to end up on the same couch together, huddled together and wrapped up in blankets – quickly setting the tone for the rest of our weekend. After the movie finished, we made our way to our beds. Emily and I have spent the night with each other before, but always with our kids. It was fun to lie in bed and talk in the dark – I’d like to say that it made me feel like I was in high school all over again, but the things we talked about were real life; greater heartaches than I could have imagined at 17 years old – honest conversation but, at times, tear-inducing nonetheless.

We took our time in the morning, getting to know Emily’s aunt and uncle and hearing insider secrets to good places to eat in New York. We decided that food was our top priority for the day – no different from my normal life, I suppose. We’d kept hearing about Doughnut Plant on all the Pinterest “Must-Do in NYC” lists, so we had to give it a shot first thing in the morning. Of course, they did not disappoint. I’d highly recommend the Coconut Cream and, as I just had to try the strangest-sounding doughnut on the menu, the Cashew & Orange. Yum!!

new-york-city-girls-getaway_0004new-york-city-girls-getaway_0006I had also brought some camera gear with me so I could trade it in at the B&H store, but as we started walking there, I read online that they were closed that day for the Passover! I was pretty bummed that I would have to carry an extra camera on my back for the rest of the day, but it made for a killer shoulder workout.

As half of our Girl Squad are major Project Runway fans, we made a stop at the Mood Fabric store. Apparently this is where the contestants run into the store, on some sort of time limit, dashing around looking for the fabrics they’ll be using in their next challenge (can you tell I am not one of the major fans of the show?) It was still a fun pit stop though, and it did make me wish I was craftier!

I almost thought that I would actually not be eating at a Shake Shack during a trip to NYC, and I was trying to convince myself that I would be okay with that, but when Emily and Holly said they had never eaten at a Shake Shack before then we decided we needed to make their first experience at one be with us! We started the long trek from Broadway to Central Park. After getting stuck in a human traffic jam along times square, we purposefully meandered through quieter streets at times, just to imagine what life would be like living in a cute and quaint “neighborhood” of Chelsea. Street vendors were plentiful and we weaved in and out of little stands, smelling foods and admiring crafts from all over the world.

After we rested and ate at my favorite burger joint, we crossed into Central Park and admired the feeling of festivity so abundant amongst everyone there.

We came out the other side of Central Park just in time to make a stop inside the Metropolitan Museum of Art. By the time we finished browsing the Met, it was just about sunset already.

We took a quick subway to the Brooklyn Bridge, crossing over it just as dusk fell. I had never walked the entire length of the Brooklyn Bridge (only halfway, almost 4 years ago), and it was pure magic to watch the sky change from light blue hues, to midnight navies. On the other side of the bridge, we ended our night with a chilly outdoor dinner of amazing pizza and dessert – Brookie Bridge, Cannoli, and Cheesecake.

We were all pretty much delirious with cold and tiredness, having walked 14 miles that day, and we barely made it back to the house with our eyeballs open. Emily was already asleep by the time I made it back to bed this time!

In the morning, we dressed up and took pictures (because what else do you do when you travel with two photographers?) and said good bye to new friends, Emily’s aunt, uncle, their three pups, and two cats. Because we had missed church, we decided to listen to a few Mormon Messages on the car ride home. they sent all of us into tears, of course, and we shared our hearts with each other and realized how lucky we all were for the lives we lead – lives filled to the brim with good friends, precious children, eternal families, and the good news of the gospel. We left our homes Friday evening, eager for a few days away from crying children and the demands of houses and husbands – and we returned eager and excited to be reunited with them all. that is the gift of true friendship, I learned that weekend – people who bring you closer to the important things in life. I love these women so much and admire them greatly. Each of them have blessed me in different ways, and my life would definitely have a large hole in it without them!

Oh my goodness, Doughnut Plant is A-MAZING. Did anyone get the pb&j? My husband and I were just up there a couple weeks ago and this post makes me want to go back to NYC asap!
