My first photography workshop literally changed my life. That sounds a bit dramatic, but hear me out. The things I learned at Katelyn’s workshop changed the way I wanted to run my business. It opened my eyes to a different way of doing things, it introduced me to the photography community, the value of friendship, the value of education, and, probably the most important of all for me – the value of investing in myself.
That workshop was 2 years ago, and the growth my business has seen since then is incredible. I remember sitting in Katelyn’s living room, hearing her advise us to start charging X amount of money for our sessions and thinking to myself, “Oh, I will never be brave enough to ask that much from people.” And do you know what? That was a lie I told myself because here I am now, doing just that. That workshop was the “gateway drug” to a whole new world within this industry and I haven’t looked back since.
A few months ago, my photography bestie Michelle from Michelle & Logan brought up an idea of hosting a two-day long workshop. She’s been teaching beginner photography workshops already, but wanted to do something beyond that. She wanted to create a retreat for female photographers to come together, learn, and inspire each other. A place for grown-up sleepovers (in the beautiful Island Park, Idaho to say the least!!) and heart to heart talks, and real life lessons shared with each other. A place for businesses to grow, hearts to connect, and creativity to be recharged….a spark in the fire to be rekindled. The more she talked about it, the more excited I became. I listened as she told me her idea and when she asked me if I thought she could do it, I said, “Of course!! Yes, definitely!! You totally should do it!”
She said, “Do you think this is something people would be interested in?” and I responded, “Heck, I’M interested! I want to come to this!”
We both kind of paused.
“So, um. Can I come?”
And that’s how it started. That’s how the Michelle & Meghan Retreat was born. Well…that’s a lie. The M&M Retreat actually started months before that – with phone calls, packages, meeting up at Conferences, being real with each other, and supporting each other in ALL aspects of life, not just photography. The M&M Retreat was actually born out of a friendship, out of love – and that’s the way the workshop is going to be run.
The Michelle & Meghan Retreat will be a safe harbor for women to meet and discuss their business:
How can I edit consistently? How can I speed up my work flow? How can I improve my social media strategies? How can I book more clients? Who is my ideal client?
We’ll discuss your shooting:
Posing, working with natural light and shooting in harsh light, reception lighting and off-camera flash, ring & detail shots.
The Retreat will be a safe harbor for women to meet and discuss their lives:
How can I obtain a good work/life balance? How can I ever possibly feel like I’m enough in a world full of competition? Should I feel guilty for wanting this dream when it takes me away from my family/my other job/my husband/my friends/whatever it may be?
We’ll also have a gorgeous styled shoot to capture images for use in your portfolio and blog, to work on posing techniques and shooting details!
Don’t expect it to be all work: We’ll all stay together in one HUGE log cabin in Island Park. We’ll have yummy food, a hot tub for soaking and chatting, we’ll stay up late and get to know each other. We’ll make friends and we’ll tell embarrassing stories (well, at least I will) and we will rejoice in a shared community of photographers that all know how it feels!
Don’t expect it to be all play: We’ll be digging deep. We’ll be asking you to name your fears, vocalize your goals, dream the BIG dreams, and be real – be honest. Be raw. Be the human behind the screen. Believe in yourself. Believe in each other. Those things? Well, sometimes they’re scary.
Just a few days ago, I questioned hitting publish on this post. I asked myself, “Who I am to lead a group of women?” And it boils down to this: I don’t know it all. I don’t profess to, and I never will. But what I do know, I want to share. And what I don’t know? I’ll admit it. And that right there, is enough. Mostly, I want us to learn from each other. Mostly, I want you to know that what you’re doing matters. That when you feel like giving up, you still have a whole lot more in reserve than you think. That learning new habits and systems can sometimes change your life – and we’re here to help you do that!
The final details:
