Black Balsam Knob provides stunning, 360 views of the Blueridge mountains. It requires a steep 15 minute hike to the first overlook, and another 10 minute hike to the next overlook (which I always recommend to those who are up to it!).

BBK is a beautiful sunset location. The sunrise is equally stunning, but sometimes you do have to wait for the fog to burn off. Because BBK is at a higher elevation, the weather is often very different from lower elevation. It can be tricky to know what to expect. It is often windier, chillier, and foggier. But when the weather works out, it just can't be beat. You have to be willing to take your chances!

A few tips for making a session at Black Balsam Knob easier for everyone!
- Don't worry about the weather until the day before! The forecast is hardly ever right a week ahead of time. We will make the final call about weather the evening before our session. I will try to make the best decision possible for the best outcome of your photos, but I cannot guarantee the conditions at the top.
- Be prepared for colder temps at the top! Bring layers and/or a jacket to take on and off in between photos.
- Wear shoes you can hike in! We can always change in and out of other shoes for photos.
- If we are doing a sunset session, we will be hiking back down when it's starting to get dark. Bring a flashlight or make sure your phone is charged enough to use the flashlight on your phone!
- There is no cell service at the trailhead. I will wait 30 minutes at the trailhead. If I don't see you by then, I will leave the location to get cell phone service and call you.
- Because BBK is not in a National Park, dogs are allowed on the trail. Keep in mind if you decide to bring your pup,  this means there might be other dogs around!
- Google Maps sometimes takes you past the trailhead. If you end up at a spot with a bathroom, you've gone too far. Too around and look for a long line of cars parked on the side of the road.
